X.org 7.2Forum: System Topic: X.org 7.2 started by: gammelmarakuja Posted by gammelmarakuja on Aug. 19 2007,11:42
Hey...I just loaded X.org 7.2 (with some problems because of a checksum error) but though I got it. Now I'm standing in front of the problem with an empty xorg.conf. What do I have to write there. And Is everything already ready when the files are still in /opt/xorg72 or do I have to copy them somewhere?

Do "xorg -configure", it will auto-configure you one in the current directory and you can then move it to /etc/X11/ as xorg.conf and then edit if it needs more editing..

xorg -configure does nothing when I tip it
Posted by curaga on Aug. 19 2007,15:59
It's supposed to only blink the screen and if you type "ls" you see a new file

Curaga - if we are speaking of the 27MB(?) version you posted, I'm not sure that xorg -configure works. I could be wrong, but I believe it might need the 47MB version ^hats^ was working on?
Posted by gammelmarakuja on Aug. 19 2007,16:07
and where do I get this 47MB version?
Posted by gammelmarakuja on Aug. 20 2007,11:40
it's not in the MyDsl extention

I think there was an agreement on which one to upload for distribution, but there may have been some complications... I'll check around. In the meantime, if you require a more 'immediate' solution, you may pm (private message) me a request for the package. btw it's case sensitive, so it should be `Xorg -configure` Posted by gammelmarakuja on Aug. 23 2007,09:17
in which dir do I type it? it still does nothing :? ( -> error: Xorg, command not found) and do I have to load th lib and dirs to /usr/lib ,etc or are they to stay in /opt/xorg ? the rest of the installaton is like the one in the info file from the MyDsl insn't it? Where exactly do I copy the xorg.conf, when it's ready?

I'm not in front of a dsl machine at the moment to verify, but you should enter something like /opt/xorg72/bin/xorg -configure. Note that you could also use Google to file an xorg.conf file for your machine and use that instead. You can leave all the xorg files where they are in /opt - that's the idea of a uci/tar.gz extension. OH i got my mistake ;) its nor xorg -cofigure itis X(!)org-configure ^^By starting it...there is the error, that "Cannot open log file "/opt/xorg72/var/log/Xorg.0.log"" =/ wtf? Posted by gammelmarakuja on Aug. 23 2007,11:58
Did I get that right: I can use my XF86Config-4 also instead of xorg.config ?
Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Aug. 23 2007,18:02
Which extension are you using now, and what kind of DSL installation are you using? And no, he meant to get another version of xorg.conf (although you might be able to use your old XF86Config-4) Posted by gammelmarakuja on Aug. 23 2007,21:02
I'm using the Xorg you sent me. The bigger one, cause eith the older one I can't make Xorg -configure...I have currently DSL 3.4 and XFree86 -> without mouse -.- I don't know how to add USB mouse to XF86Config-4 Posted by gammelmarakuja on Aug. 23 2007,21:44
Okee...I fixed the thing about the Mouse. ^^

I asked what type of installation. Anyways, to test it out, just boot from a fresh livecd and it should work without problems.

Oh ^^ I've got an hd-install ;) okee...I'll try it out with the live cd of DSL 4 RC1Would it work with a frugal install better than with an hd-install? Posted by gammelmarakuja on Aug. 24 2007,10:46
Okee...here is the final report of how to get X.org on an hd-install (if any one is interested):1. Get xorg.0.log and X.org from me or ^thehatsrule^ and mount it. 2. Copy /opt/xorg72 to /home/dsl 3. Unmount xorg72.uci 4. Copy /home/dsl/xorg72 to /opt/ 5. delete /opt/xorg72/var/log 6. MkDir log and copy there xorg.0.log 7. su - 8. change /root/.xserverrc as explained in the info to xorg.uci 9. Control+Alt+Del 10. aterm (su): /opt/xorg72/bin/./Xorg -configure 11. su - Thats it ^^ but you have only Xorg in root not in dsl. Dsl doesn't have enough power ;) Posted by roberts on Aug. 24 2007,14:49
Topic moved as X.org is an extension.

hm, it looks like the extension will need a bit of changing due to it looking for /ramdisk ... which doesn't exist under a hd-install. Thanks for the testing under a hd-install ;pcomments on your steps: 1. Don't need to get a log file... its generated 9. why restart? Could result in problems during next boot... 11. unneeded leftover step? Add step 12. Kill X and startx. Just edit /home/dsl/.xserverrc, and you should be able to startx as user dsl. Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Aug. 31 2007,21:07
Update: the fixed extension has now been posted to testing.

After setting up my Vaio C1VE with DSL 4.2.2 I had also to install a new Xserver. The resolution of the Vaio is just to strange for a normal installation After fiddling around with a full blown XFree86 I tried Xorg72.uci which installed fine. I prefer harddisk installation so I would like to keep this extension permanently but after a reboot it was gone. So I unpacked the *.uci to my /home/dsl directory and moved it to /opt/ There is no mre XF86Config-4 file in /etc/X11. I repeated the steps described in xorg72setup.info several times but no success ( failed on Xorg -configure) each as user and as root. XIO: fatal IO error 104 /Connection reset by peer)on X server ":0:0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining. What can this be? When I mount the uci Xorg starts without problem... Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Jan. 03 2008,21:40
What did you do in those steps?Make sure you copy it with the correct permissions, i.e. as user dsl:
Since you have a traditional hdd-install, you shouldn't have to re-run xorg72setup since your config files should still be there. And you should be looking for /etc/X11/xorg.conf and not /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 Posted by Andreas on Jan. 03 2008,22:31
Deleted my former xorg72 installation and just installed the way you told me.Got this error: Fatal server error: Cannot move old log file ("/opt/xorg72/var/log/Xorg.0.log" to /opt/xorg72/var/log/ Xorg.0.log.old" giving up xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Jan. 04 2008,02:27
You probably have to do the copying/moving as root... I edited my previous post. X should run fine as root though. These are just hd-install related things... perhaps removing the .tar.gz version was not such a good idea. If that doesn't help it, maybe output `ls -l /opt/xorg72/bin/Xorg` here. Posted by Andreas on Jan. 04 2008,10:16

-rwsr-xr-x 1 dsl staff 1612524 Jul 15 14:00 /opt/xorg72/bin/Xorg Each time I reboot Ive to reinstall xorg72. The directory will then be empty... Why is this so? Ive done a HD install, not a frugal one... Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Jan. 04 2008,16:01
Mydsl is designed for frugal systems... you can look up how each extension differs. The simplest answer is that .uci's contain compressed filesystems that are mounted when installed.Did you try copying it as with sudo/root privileges like i suggested in my previous thread? It has the wrong owner. As an alternative you can either just load the extension every time, or manually chown the files to 0.0 |
