I am trying to install DSL on a thinkpad 380D but so far all the video options produce a  very bad resolution .
has someone succesfully been able to configure a laptop using DSL with an acceptable res and how?

The 380D should be capable of 1024X768 resolution.

Try using the Xvesa server with that resolution and an 8 bit color depth.  It works for me on my old Compaq.

no that setting does not work for me neither the other ones offered  I wander if the DPI settings had anything to do since the sice of graphics are ok but the color is awfull .

hi dougvega, has this laptop's color been OK with other operating systems? I've seen the green color you describe when a laptop's video cable is loose or damaged.

I have seen a wierd blue/green screen when I try some combinations of resolution and depth. You might try entering the following at a console prompt.

Xvesa -listmodes

That should give you several possible combinations.  Not all will work but it's a start.

good luck

On my Toshiba laptop I use:
boot: knoppix vga=789

yes my laptop works great with windows , Knoppix and morphix but these distros are too big I like the fact that DSL is very small
Posted by Modrak on Feb. 16 2004,16:23
try everything...start at 640x480x4b to maximal res of your notebook...or try framebuffer server (the first one in the X config wizard...)
bleee WIZARD...that sound's like MakroShaft

Now, I just went and did a fancy HD install on this thing, and it works great in framebuffer mode.  However, the res on it is 1024x768, and this Thinkpad 380XD doesn't fit that - it only fits 800x600 - how do I set it up so that it boots into that fancy thing you were talkinga bout with those modes or whatever, so it boots into framebuffering of 800x600 ?

I tried with the xvesa with all combos of 800x600 and every depth from 4bit to 32bit and none of them worked - I got wierd coloured vertical lines across the screen that made it so you couldn't see anything.  Any suggestions ?

Boot with "knoppix fb800x600" or edit /etc/lilo.conf and add "fb800x600" to the append line. Then don't forget to rerun lilo.
Posted by PhrozenFear on Mar. 19 2004,18:14
Found that append line - damned non-colour terminal...  Trying now...

And I tried booting with knoppix fb800x600 - the resolution defaults to 1024x768.

Now, another question if I may - where do you put that vga=789 mode when you don't have the knoppix boot prompt ?
Posted by Rapidweather on Mar. 21 2004,00:30
Try to boot the machine with a DSL cd, and at the prompt enter:
knoppix vga=789, then use the xfbdev server choice given, not the xvesa.

Posted by PhrozenFear on Mar. 21 2004,07:04
How does one do that without having to do a reinstall of the HD-install I did ?  Any way to plug that into my xsetup or lilo.conf ?  I'm not a debian / lilo person, so I dunno how it's all put together
Posted by PhrozenFear on Mar. 21 2004,08:33
Or tell me how to set that up so I can make it work on my HD-install.

Hi
There is a problem changing X resolution after a hard-drive install.  If you are not logged on as root the menu script does not actually change the settings because of permission problems.  The settings are actually saved in a file which can only be wriiten to by root.      /opt/xsetup
At a shell prompt try    sudo xsetup.sh

Then when you make your changes they will actually be saved and used the next time you      startx

i used the cheat  code knoppix vga=789 but it took me to the shell
mode with very limited commands I dono what to do any more  any more I'd really like to have DSL on my laptop due to my limited resourses it'l make a great distro

Hi,
You can put the vga=789 into the file lilo.conf, then that will be the default booting setting.
Good luck!

Hi
my problems not with x xvesa works fine, athou it wont work in 1024x768, due to my LCD ( Ihave an OmniBook 900a {the one with the NEOMAGIC Display Chip}) it phyisicaly stuck at 800x600, my problrm it at boot and the Graphical Console sceen for boot time messages , any way to get that to be text or in 800x600, because i dont know debian , i use a home brewed   distro based on Yggdrasil and MINIX so ihave little experince in anthing else. so if anyone can help point me either to the info, or give me the info that would be help full.

I figured it out - in the lilo.conf, on the very top, it shows the vga mode - just had to modify it to 789 not 798 and all was good.  Thanks for your help everyone.

Hello,  I have the same Laptop, and I am getting this green screen.  I use to use win 95 on it, and it was fine.  Before I install it on the HD,  how can I get rid of the green problem.  I tried all 640, and 600X800 options.  where can I put in VGA 789 comand?

I am a compleat Linux newb so I am not to quick.  Also does DSL have a spreadsheet program, or do I have to find one??

I was just recently strugleing with this same problem and i hvae a bit of information that might be useful to anyone faceing it.  I have a IBM ThinkPad 380D with DSL 0.7 installed on the harddrive.  When booting up i got a message informing me that "you have entered a undefined mode number"  after reading < This Page > (http://techpubs.sgi.com/library/tpl/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi/[email protected]/linux/HOWTO/usr/HOWTO/Framebuffer-HOWTO.html) I decided to try entering 0314 after getting the above message during boot.  It worked.  Then to make it permintate I changed my vga = xxx line in my lilo.conf to vga = 314.  it did not work, nor did vga = 0314.  Then I tried useing vga = 0x314.  That solved it.  I have not tried it but useing the same consept of puting the modes in the form of 0xNNN with some of the other modes listed throughout this forum might also work.
---notes---
I am useing Xfbdev.
setting vga to 0x314 gives you 800x600 at 16 bit color
if you want to use a different mode (resolution, color depth, etc.) some options are listed < here >  (http://techpubs.sgi.com/library/tpl/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi/[email protected]/linux/HOWTO/usr/HOWTO/Framebuffer-HOWTO.html#ss5.3)

if anyone has any questions you can email me at:
coolhoot <then a dot> pub <then an at sign> charter <then another dot> net
But keep in mind that i have VERY little linux experence and can not be counted on for support, also PLEASE don't bombard me!

hope I could be some help

Phew! Thanks for that man - dunno how you figured it out, but X kept crashing on this crappy Presario1220 laptop. Your fix sorted everything out. Enjoying DSL now. Sweeeeet.

esp. since I found the lappy on the street
Battery is missing, but everything else works fine.

Thank you thank you thank you. And big respect to the people who put Knoppix / DSL / etc  together - fantastic work!
