I use cable (Charter cable) modem with DSL. Works fine for me.

My setup:

Motorola Surfboard modem, Linksys network card, Ethernet cable (I don't use the usb connection to me cable modem).

You need to know two things:

(1) Did DSL detect your Network card properly.  If the card is an old ISA network card, chances are you will need to manually start the drivers for that card
# sudo su
# modprobe xxxxx                 (where xxxxx is your network card's driver module name)
# exit
# exit

Then run netcardconfig from the menu.

(2) Does your cable company have any special requirements (beyond normal DHCP) in order to connect to the internet. You can try searching the internet with Google to find out if other people have already learned how to make their non-Windows computer work with this cable company. For example: 'Cox cable modem linux' or 'Cox cable modem router' would be some good search words if your cable company was Cox.

Good Luck

I prefer network cards (ethernet) connection for broadband usage. You can get a cheap Network card for between $0.00 and $10.00 USA if you send in the mail-in rebates. Check out Salescircular.com for details:

However, there is a Linux driver for the USB link to your cable modem.

Open an xterminal window (Shell Rxvt on the menu) and type:

sudo su
modprobe CDCEther
exit
exit

Then run the NetCardConfig from the Fluxbox menu.

This assumes that DSL has the CDCEther drive already installed on the CD disk. See this web page for more details:
